He is the author of numerous books on social issues, spirituality, culture, and literature including Another Sort of Learning (1988), Idylls and Rambles (1994), On the Unseriousness of Human Affairs: Teaching, Writing, Playing, Believing, Lecturing, Philosophizing, Singing, Dancing (2002). His most recent books are The Life of the Mind: On the Joys and Travails of Thinking (ISI, 2006), The Sum Total of Human Happiness (St. Augustine's Press, 2006), and The Regensburg Lecture (St. Augustine's Press, 2007).
